The Best '70s Hairstyles and How to Copy Them, According to Hairstylists

hair in the 70's women's

Ask for long layers to create easy texture you can style in less than 5 minutes. Goldie Hawn’s hair set trends starting in the ’60s and continued to do so with her long curtain bang style that’s still referenced in salons to this day. HB 5097 also establishes guidelines for implementing and funding these plans, ensuring they are effectively carried out and integrated into the overall care framework for youth in foster care.

The Voluminous Afro

Use a large-barrel curling iron to get the feathered look and curl your hair away from the face. Tease for even more volume and then set the style with a strong-hold hairspray, like the Dove Style+Care Extra Hold Hairspray. Long, pin-straight hair with a middle part is an easy go-to '70s haircut to give you that disco vibe. "This is all about the [flat] iron and using heat protectant," says Abergel. He recommends using a combination of Virtue’s 6-in- 1 Styler and Healing Oil to protect hair and give it extra shine.

The bob

"Apply curlers to each section of hair that has been curled, and pin up with bobby pins," he says. If you’re a fan of an edgier look, this next hairstyle is for you! The choppy bob was worn by some of the most iconic female rock stars of the decade, so get ready to channel your inner rocker. Bring this style from the ‘70s to today and style your cut with the help of the L’Oréal Paris Studio Line Overworked Hair Putty for plenty of texture and a stylishly messy look.

While we love a good side part, the ‘70s were known for the symmetrical middle part. Whether it’s thanks to lockdown and the inability to see our hairdressers or not, ultra long mermaid hair has become increasingly popular over the past year. From Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande to Jennifer Lopez, it’s a look reminiscent of Cher and Ali MacGraw’s long, sleek locks.

The loc wearer can use rollers, bantu knots, or pipe cleaners to achieve curls. Otherwise, the hair may grow as long as the loc bearer chooses. Ask anyone who was there in the '70s and they'll tell you it was a time for long, free-flowing locks with a dead-center part. As Tardo puts it, "The allure of the '70s hair is perpetuated through the iconic time's reputation for glamour and cool." And this style is nothing if not glamorous and cool.

Leave it to Zoë Kravitz to serve up a boho-inflected protective style. Here, Kravitz wears micro braids woven with thin locs for an effortless '70s look. Debbie Sessions has been teaching fashion history and helping people dress for vintage themed events since 2009. She has turned a hobby into VintageDancer.com with hundreds of well researched articles and hand picked links to vintage inspired clothing online.

To make styling as foolproof as possible, it’s important to start when the hair is damp. “I’ll apply a few dollops of gel, mousse or moisturizing styling cream with my fingers,” he says. “If your hair is on the coarser, kinkier side, finish the look with a few passes of a small straightening iron,” he adds. "This look is about cropped layers and creating tons of texture," notes Cotteblanche.

Lived-In Waves

Feather-light fringe bangs (AKA Birkin bangs) are the wispy, French girl-esque cut we didn't know we needed, and we love how they look on Jourdan Dunn. According to celebrity stylist Michael Dueñas, today's version is slightly longer for the option to push to the side or wear in the front. "Have your stylist lay their comb at the start of your hairline going to the back of your head," he says. "Where the comb lifts up is how thick your bang section should be." Fawcett became a star when she was cast in Charlie's Angels, and as a result, everyone wanted this hair during that decade (and well into the '80s, too). You'll need a decent barrel brush (We love Drybar's Double Pint Round Ceramic Brush, $42) to help recreate this look.

“The oil should be delicately applied to dry hair and scalp using gentle, circular motions,” she says. You can also use a silicone scalp massager to really get in there if you're averse to digging your fingers into your scalp (and it helps me prevent from scratching with my long, gel-X nails). Then, gently massage into the scalp for 10 to 15 minutes in circular motions before smoothing through the lengths of your hair. It's "a process of infusing your hair with natural oils to restore luster and hydrate hair," says dermatologist Candace Spann, MD. We've revisited the ’90s; we've done butterfly clips, straightened tendrils, scrunchies, and Rachel Green–style plastic claw clasps.

The Nicaraguan-born beauty (and muse to Halston) ushered in a return to Old Hollywood waves. The supermodel was the epitome of laid-back glamour with her long blonde mane.

If you already have a lengthy mane, add in a wavy texture with some sea salt spray and a healthy dose of scrunching. The bob is having a major moment lately, as evidenced by Selena’s buzzworthy chop. To get a similar look, ask your stylist for a jaw-grazing cut and incorporate a texturizing spray into your routine to add definition to those new layers. This buzzy cut was seen on everyone from Jane Fonda to Joyce Dewitt throughout the ‘70s. The shorter style has longer layers on top and a deep side part for added volume and tapered ends that hug the nape of the neck. Afro textured hair was fluffy and full – see Diana Ross and Pam Grier.

Wedge Hairstyle

This sleek cut was popular in the 1970s as an alternative to short hair. The 1970s hairstyle had bangs that angled neatly into the rest of the hair. Try swinging side bangs for a more current pageboy appearance to keep everything appearing stylish and trendy. Ask anybody who grew up in the 1970s knew very well about this 70s haircut, and they’ll tell you it was a period for lengthy, free-flowing tresses with a dead-center part. As Tardo puts it, and as we can see, the iconic look of the ’70s is still in vogue today, maintaining the allure of the era’s hair. And this style is a simple way to add a touch of glitter to your hair.

Full and voluminous was the only way to do a pony back in the day, and her side fringe is just the cherry on top. If baby braids—whether placed as face-framing pieces or just strewn in random places throughout the hair—don't absolutely yell '70s in all caps, we don't know what does. "I love when you create a classic braid securing the end with a band, then pulling it out so it is messy and undone. Clip to desired look—you can always place it wherever you want."

An obvious place to start, the shag cut is everywhere this year. Defined by its choppy layers and wavy texture, Stevie Nicks and Mick Jagger wore excellent examples of the look back then. Billie Eilish, Selena Gomez and models like Mica Argañaraz have all recently sported the shag. Grace Jones's '80s flattop is forever in culture's Hair Hall of Fame, as is her short cut from her modelling days a decade prior. To pull your coils back in soft, sultry fashion, opt for a pineapple updo.

The Best Creams and Tools for Removing Hair 2023: Creams, Wax, and More

best hair reduction cream

After all, some facial hair removal products work well on peach fuzz but can’t cut it with thick hair. With this in mind, we scoured the web for the top-rated facial hair removal products and put them to the test, evaluating them on ease of use, effectiveness, and the resulting look and feel of our skin. Then, to fill in any blanks, we chatted with a few dermatologists for their expertise. Dr. Lal uses (and loves!) this hair removal cream from iconic brand Nair because it's filled with good-for-skin ingredients.

Melon extract, aloe vera, avocado oil, and honey all work to keep skin hydrated and calm during the hair removal process. Obviously, there are a few things to keep in mind before trying out a new hair removal cream. “To lower irritation risk, you can only leave it on for one to three minutes and then shave it off in a warm shower,” S.

Best Foam Formula

For more precise application, this gentle hair removal cream comes with a tool to help you place the formula exactly where you want it—and nowhere else. It's safe to use just about anywhere on the body—the legs, underarms, bikini line, arms, and stomach—works in less than 10 minutes, and has a subtle scent that's surprisingly pleasing. Infused with natural coconut oil and vitamin E, this hair removal formula is designed for sensitive, hard-to-reach areas like your underarms. Let it sit for four to six minutes, then wipe away with a wet towel or rinse it off with water.

Best Hair-Removal Spray

If you live in a hot climate, you may find that you need a haircut sooner than your friends who spend more of their year in colder weather. We created the PEOPLE Tested seal of approval to help you find the very best products for your life. We use our unique methodology to test products in three labs across the country and with our network of home testers to determine their effectiveness, durability, ease of use, and so much more. Based on the results, we rate and recommend products so you can find the right one for your needs. Summertime means bare skin, but there isn’t always time to keep up appearances. Nair’s Hair Removal Lotion works its magic fast — smooth on a thick layer to the desired area and remove it with a damp washcloth after just three minutes.

In fact, if you are more on the sensitive side, you need to take even more caution before using these creams – if the skin is irritated, broken or damaged, best to avoid them altogether. But if you do still want to give them a go, this Nair option may be your best bet. With aloe vera extract, it soothes while smoothing away hair quickly, easily and without any pain.

Basically, with this kit in your arsenal, you are your own wax technician. Users like how effective the product is at removing hair from such a sensitive area but a word of warning–it is painful. First, use the included cleanser to prepare your skin for hair removal.

Generally, it also isn’t suitable for pregnant women, those with certain skin/hair conditions and those undergoing particular treatments — check the fine print before you buy. These devices aren’t cheap — the most affordable one on our list is the SmoothSkin at £269 — but buying one should mean you don’t have to make regular trips to the salon anymore. Home DIY kits range from relatively inexpensive wax pots with strips, through to more expensive, refillable cartridge roller-based systems and heated pods inspired by salon technology. Aloe vera and shea butter are included to make it less harsh on the skin, too. Being only 100ml, we did use the whole tube to cover both legs, but at less than £6, this was much cheaper than a wax, and the results lasted for around two weeks (but, obviously, this will differ from person to person).

With aloe vera and vitamin E, this foam formula will painlessly remove hair and leave you with smooth, moisturized skin. This hair removal cream is specifically made to use on the bikini area so you can expect minimal to zero irritation, pain, or bumps. The formula also includes nourishing and soothing ingredients like green tea, aloe, and chamomile. Forget wax—this hair removal cream is just as fast and lasts just as long but doesn't hurt at all. And because it's specially formulated for the upper lip, chin, and face, it contains extra-gentle and nourishing ingredients, like sweet almond oil, to minimize inflammation.

Decide your ideal formula

To report this piece, she drew on her personal experience using different facial hair removals and testing insights from the editors and staffers at Health. We chose the Flamingo Facial Hair Removal Cream as the best overall facial hair remover for many reasons. The applicator is built straight into the bottle, making the cream extremely easy to apply.

"Once removed, the hair shaft will take several weeks to regrow and push through the skin," she says. The Tweezerman Smooth Finish Facial Hair Remover is designed to pluck hair from the skin with a tightly wound coil that’s maneuvered with two tiny handles. That said, it does work well to remove peach fuzz and upper lip hair, so if that’s your goal—and if you have a high pain tolerance—it may be worth checking out. Beloved by our testers, the Panasonic Women’s Facial Hair Remover and Eyebrow Trimmer is sold in black and pale pink and features two eyebrow comb attachments to groom your arches into your ideal length and shape. While using a battery-operated trimmer may feel intimidating at first, we can attest that the rounded-edges of the tool’s blade make it a near effortless feat.

He also spoke with Dr. Zeichner on what to look for in hair removal creams, as well as how to apply it properly without damaging your skin. Munce has over a decade of experience trying and testing hair removal products. Sensitive skin and hair removal creams are far from a match made in heaven.

Too much and you run the risk of no hair getting hit, too little and there’s no protection at all, so finding the sweet spot may take a bit of time, but once you get there, it’s hard to go back. After the balm, smooth on a layer of the removal cream as normal, and, after five to eight minutes, your brows, cheeks or chin should be silky smooth. The Hoosh cream works incredibly quickly, with results in as little as three minutes, making it great for those in a rush.

The level of discomfort varies from person to person, but it can feel slightly tingly and hot (similar to the feeling of being flicked with an elastic band). Most devices also have a range of settings, so you can find the most effective – and comfortable – for you. Below, we look at the different solutions available, from creams and waxing to epilators and IPL machines. We’ll bring you the top-scoring products along the way, which have been thoroughly tested by our reader panels and our experts in the GHI lab. Head hair grows about 6 inches per year, but body hair grows much more slowly than that.

Best hair removal cream 2024: Tried and tested on legs, face and bikini line

This is formulated for use on the legs and is a good option for anyone who wants that super silky feel without using a razor. We found that our hair grew back at a similar rate to shaving but the hair that returned was definitely softer. Our only real complaint was that after covering both legs with the cream, we only got two uses out of one bottle so this perhaps isn’t a long-term option. This is a good option for those with very sensitive skin or anyone that can’t shave for health reasons. Also, consider avoiding formulations that contain additives that might irritating to the scalp and inadvertently cause dryness or itchiness, such as harsh chemicals, dyes, and fragrances. Instead, seek out those that have been dermatologist-tested, says Dr. Shaver.

Best Hair Removal Cream for Legs

Even when trimming thicker, quick-growing strands—like men’s facial hair—this product left our skin smooth and even. Plus, we noticed no adverse skin reactions during our six-week testing period. If you prefer waxing above all facial hair removal methods, at the very least, do yourself the favor of trying the Athena Club Wax Strip Kit for Face.

It also comes with a number of attachments including a facial cap and a bikini trimmer so you can use it from head to toe, even in the bath or shower. Enjoy the results of a wax (up to four weeks of smooth, hairless skin) without all the fuss. Today’s hair removal creams are unlike anything you might remember from your youth. Pungent, harsh creams have given way to better, gentler formulas that leave skin silky-smooth. So what are the benefits of reaching for a hair removal cream versus wax or a razor?

Best Time-Saver

It’s also amazing that this razor has two different blades, which help to trim hair down as far as possible without removing it from the root. A study published in the Journal of International Development states that hair removal creams work by creating instability in the keratin structure of the hair. These creams make your hair thin and then dissolve them into jelly-like consistency so that it can be broken off and wiped away easily.

“Inner thighs might be more sensitive than outer and lower legs,” she notes, adding that underarms also tend to be more sensitive compared to other parts of the arm. If you're looking for something with a fresh fragrance, this Andmetics cream smells like watermelon and is formulated with gentle ingredients. If the hair on your chin is thick, coarse, or curly, this cream will get rid of it in minutes. It also features ingredients like shea butter and almond oil to keep your bare face moisturized and free of irritation. This charcoal mask does double duty by exfoliating the skin while also removing unwanted hair.

"Avoid applying on sunburnt skin, or skin that has any cut or wound," says Akram. The esthetician also does not recommend depilatory creams for those who are sensitive. You apply this cream first to dry skin, then step into the shower to rinse it off—and your unwanted body hair along with it. Then, use a warm, wet washcloth (or just water itself, depending on the formula) to remove the cream.

In fact, the very products used to remove facial hair can be pretty damaging. That's why it's so important to only use highly-rated, dermatologist-backed products and devices for hair removal. It has an angled head and a safety guard, so it will help you not only remove unwanted hair but protect your skin in the process, too. All our testers were pleased with the lack of regrowth after just three weeks and found it worked well on the body, including the bikini line, and facial hair, thanks to the different attachments for extra precision. It works by scattering “intense pulsed light” (a broad-spectrum light) across the skin.

Best Hair Removal Cream for Dry Skin

However, if you're not cautious, you can easily burn and hurt your skin by leaving the product on for too long. "Hair-removal creams contain ingredients such as sodium thioglycolate, calcium thioglycolate, and strontium sulfide," says Vanessa Thomas, cosmetic chemist and founder of Freelance Formulations. "These ingredients work by breaking down the protein bonds of the hair. In a water-based solution at the proper pH, these ingredients are converted to acid, which then affects the hair." With extra attachments for the face and bikini line along with the standard shaver and trimmer, this is for anyone that wants one gadget to do everything, hair-removal wise. Epilation is more painful than other options in this list but if you don’t mind that, this is an excellent multi-tasker.

Our runner up pick for the best body hair removal cream, the WooWoo Natural Tame It! Vegan In-Shower Hair Removal Cream, is formulated with aloe vera gel and jojoba oil, which soothe and nourish dry skin. Similarly, our top pick for the best spray, the Veet Spray on Cream, also features aloe vera along with vitamin E. The Completely Bare Easy Off Foaming Hair Removal Spray is another dry skin-benefiting formula thanks to its inclusion of shea butter. Wet or dry, this virtually painless epilator grabs onto even the shortest hairs that waxing and shaving miss. It can remove hair four times shorter than is needed for waxing and, since it's basically a quicker version of tweezing, you don't have to pass on this new hair removal device if you also use a retinoid.

We gathered all of the feedback from our testers to deliver in-depth reviews, pros and cons, and things to keep in mind about each product on our winning list. Looking for a facial hair removal tool you can toss in your carry-on and use on the go? The battery-operated shaver is only slightly larger than a tube of lipstick and works efficiently to buzz off unwanted facial hair—especially since it has a pinpoint spotlight to help guide the way. Inside the box is a spatula for easy application, along with the 100ml tube of cream.

It glides super smoothly over the skin and makes the hair removal process painless. It’s also one of the quickest-to-use products on this list, delivering instantaneous results. Sirona Hair Removal Cream is enriched with the goodness of shea butter, aloe vera, vitamin E and peppermint oil. The brand claims that this talc-free cream has no side effects in the long run. It is free from harmful ingredients, which may ensure that you get smooth and soft skin.

Stamping (pressing onto a specific area) is better for smaller areas where you need to be more precise. To help prevent them, gently exfoliate both before waxing and the day after if you don't have any redness. Dabbing a natural antiseptic onto the area will also help ease inflammation. Cold wax formulas are easy to use and are activated by rubbing the strips between the palms of your hands to warm them.

“The advantages of this kind of hair removal are that it’s painless, easy, fast, and relatively inexpensive,” says Hadley King, a New York City-based dermatologist. "And compared to shaving, there is a decreased risk of cutting the skin." Skip the irritating razors and wax and try this gentle hair-removal cream instead from Nad’s.

coursera graphic design

If Coursera’s Graphic Design Specialization is the only graphic design education you’ve had (self-taught or academic), you likely won’t have a good enough portfolio to get a real job in graphic design. Students learn some type terminology, the history of popular typefaces, how to design with type by using letter spacing, kerning, leading, line length, alignment, and proximity, and how to create a type poster. The California Institute of the Arts, commonly referred to as CalArts, stands as another leading educational institution that adopts an experimental approach to cultivate critical thinking essential in artistic practice.

This course helps students to take a project to an interactive level from the initial concept by incorporating the UX Research and Design principles. If you are interested in a product designer job, graphic design skills are essential, but many more to learn beyond that. Core skills like user research, product thinking, system mapping, interaction design, storytelling are not covered in this specialization and will need some extra building. To build a design portfolio, you will need at least 2-3 complex and realistic projects.

You'll walk away with a better grasp of color theory, typography, composition, and more. The design specialization is a very condensed design education meant to give students an introduction to graphic design. It shouldn’t replace a proper design education, or years of being self-taught. That being said, if you’re interested in design, this program will give you some great fundamentals and a proper place to start learning about design. This entire specialization is a fundamentals program, so students will absolutely come away from this program with a decent grasp of some of the fundamental design principles.

Your skills will not only grow, but the more you create, the more likely you will create something awesome. This concept translates well into the majority of of real world design problems. Maybe if I took the entire specialization I could tell new designers if it’s a program worth investing in or not. In addition, I’ve been out of design school for a long time and I’m sure this program will probably be able to teach me something new.

There was also work submitted that had stock photo site watermarks on them, making the plagiarism very obvious. Students are taught about denotation and connotation, about iteration and experimentation in imagemaking, how different typefaces communicate, and how to create symbols and patterns. Students are also taught some key design principles such as space, texture, form, direction, scale, and weight. I’ve reviewed each course in the specialization separately, but here I want to talk about the program as a whole, in addition to using the Coursera model for online learning.

In this week we’ll talk about what it means to be confident, yet open to criticism. We’ll explore the importance of revision as an ongoing component of design, as well as the need to enlist feedback and maintain distance in assessing our own work. When you enroll in the course, you get access to all of the courses in the Specialization, and you earn a certificate when you complete the work. If you only want to read and view the course content, you can audit the course for free.

The lesson here is about experimentation, with both digital and print medium, with any type of tools you can. This means you shouldn’t be limited to creating an image using a pencil or marker. This was actually one of the first things my design school professor discussed from day one. Paint a twig and draw with it, use a potato stamp, mix ink and a tissue and blot it on paper. If you want to better convey text information, then you'll want to learn more about typography.

Graphic Design Specialization CalArts

coursera graphic design

The lessons in week 1 are a direct lead up to the main assignment, which is creating ten denotative images of a common household object. The object used primarily in the lessons was an apple, so I didn’t want to use that. In design school we had a nearly identical assignment, but we only asked to make a few images in black and white. The instructor then discusses various imagemaking techniques, setting up the student for their first real assignment. The main message here is that students should not be concerned with making a perfect image, but with creating as many images as they can.

As graphic design becomes more visible and prevalent in our lives, graphic design as a practice becomes more important in our culture. Fortunately, designers aren’t hired for their accomplishments or academic accolades.

A subscription to Envato Tuts+ actually gives you access to Envato Elements, as well. This means you won’t receive certification for completing it but instead, timely and regularly updated information about tricks and techniques in the graphic design field. The educators are designers themselves and fully ready to share their experience and guidance through a cognitive approach. They will also introduce you to the idea of keeping a visual journal which can play the role of a portfolio at a later stage.

Alaska cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

the best rated cruise lines

The MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen embark on 14- to 19-day Alaskan voyages between May and September. The storied Cunard cruise line, with more than 180 years of seafaring history, returned to Alaska after nearly 30 years when it arrived back in the Great Land in 2019. In addition to more than 140 shore experiences that immerse guests into this magical destination, Cunard invites explorers, travel writers and locals onboard to share their passions and knowledge. The cruise line takes inspiration from Alaska with special local dishes served in its onboard restaurants, and the return of the Ice White Ball, a formal gala affair with a glacial twist.

The Best Cruises Of 2023, According To Industry Awards

Each of the ships features an observation deck, library, science center, hot tub, pool and Explorer lounge, as well as a bar with floor-to-ceiling windows so you never miss a thing. An expedition team of Alaska experts join each voyage, hosting lectures about the areas the ships visit and guiding passengers on outings like nature walks through rainforests and kayaking trips around the foot of a glacier. Guests learn about the cultural heritage of remote communities and focus binoculars to spot bears, whales, caribou, moose, deer, wolves, birds and more.

American Cruise Line's 15-night Grand Ohio River Cruise

Restaurant prices in Alaska can be high, but a cruise bundles meals, accommodations and transportation into one price that, with sales, can be cheaper than you'd think. Cruise the Hudson round-trip from New York City on American Cruise Lines' seven-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise. You'll visit Catskill, home to the Hudson River School Art Trail and the Olana Historic Site, or explore more actively at the Hudson River Skywalk and Kaaterskill Falls.

Best cruise line for luxury travelers

Each sailing hosts a Solo Travelers party where singles can meet each other, and a roommate matching service pairs same-sex travelers in a shared stateroom to save on surcharges. Determined to dispel the myth that cruising is only for seniors, Richard Branson has shaken up the industry with a cruise line geared toward millennials—and the young at heart. Virgin Voyages’s fleet of “Lady Ships” (a playful nod to “your ladyship” and the line’s British heritage) is filled with surprises including terrace hammocks, the first tattoo shop at sea and an onboard record store.

Celebrity Beyond, which debuted in 2022, accommodates 3,260 guests has 32 bars and restaurants, like Le Voyage by chef Daniel Boulud, and two-story villas on board. Some lines also offer Alaska cruisetours that venture into Canada's Yukon, including a few Holland America tours that combine half a cruise with a cruisetour that starts or ends in Skagway. On a cruisetour, you'll sail on a one-way Gulf of Alaska cruise, so your cruise starts or ends in Alaska. Depending on the tour itinerary you choose, you might visit Seward and the Kenai Peninsula, Alyeska, Talkeetna, Anchorage and Fairbanks — as well as spend one to three nights in Denali National Park. You can also find one-way repositioning cruises between Southern California ports (Los Angeles and San Diego) and Vancouver at the beginning or end of a ship's Alaska cruise season. If you book a weeklong Gulf of Alaska voyage, you'll also enjoy exploring parts of the Inside Passage and its ports that could include a mix of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, Ketchikan, Haines and Icy Strait Point. Popular Inside Passage ports of call include Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Haines and Skagway.

Celebrate spring in California sailing round trip from San Francisco, with ports like Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Ensenada, Mexico. In Santa Barbara, a notable curated outing promises a delicious meal at a leading local restaurant and a visit to a family-owned farm and “ground to glass” winery. Live it up at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, or admire the stunning art collection and striking modern architecture at Getty Center museum. The San Diego Zoo is a must, as is desert ziplining in Baja—although driving an ATV through Guadalupe Valley’s wine country is pretty darn cool, too. Luxury cruises tend to be smaller, with more staff per guest and more deluxe amenities.

The ships tend to be large – some can carry more than 6,000 passengers – and are packed with amenities. It doesn’t matter if you want adventure, relaxation or a combination of both, the best cruises offer a convenient and all-inclusive way to explore multiple destinations without the hassle of planning individual itineraries. The world’s largest cruise line, Carnival boasts 23 ships that are favorites among those looking for less expensive fun on the sea. Although they’re known best for their Caribbean itineraries—good for a quick weekend getaway—Carnival also sails to many other destinations, including Europe, Mexico and Hawaii.

Weeklong itineraries generally embark in either Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia — though some itineraries originate in Juneau. A few lines, such as Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line, offer 10-night Inside Passage cruises from Seattle or Vancouver. Most sail along the Inside Passage, a maritime route along the state's southern coast (and into British Columbia and Washington state) that weaves around the area's thousand islands. Some venture farther north into the Gulf of Alaska; these are often one-way cruises that begin and end at the ports near Anchorage. One of the key reasons to cruise Alaska versus taking a land tour is to visit destinations along the Inside Passage that you cannot reach by road.

All excursions are led by experienced expedition teams, who provide all the equipment needed to make the most of your time in Alaska. Coming off of its 150th anniversary year, Holland America Line has been sailing to and around Alaska for more than half that time—75 years. Holland America Line’s “Alaska Up Close” deeply immerses guests in local cultures through onboard programs and activities, and shore excursions. On all of its Alaska cruises, a Huna Native Interpreter comes aboard Holland America Line ships to share the history of the Tlingit people. Spring and autumn are primetime for 16-day U.S. cruises between Fort Lauderdale and Toronto, Canada on 378-passenger expedition ship Viking Octantis.

Ships in all price ranges sail a variety of itineraries, so don't let budget stop you from visiting. If luxury is what you're after, you can find lines that will go overboard pampering you on your journey north. Gulf of Alaska sailings — especially those in late August and September — can encounter rough seas in the gulf portion of the voyage. For these itineraries, you'll need to fly into or out of Anchorage and take a train or bus to/from the cruise departure ports, which can take an hour or two. Instead of taking a long and expensive flight to Anchorage or Fairbanks, you can choose a cruise that sails round-trip from Seattle or Vancouver (note, you won't be able to tack on a post-cruise land trip to Denali if you do this).

The personalized service and all-inclusive nature of luxury voyages might also be attractive to anyone celebrating a milestone, such as an anniversary, big birthday or retirement. Most big-ship and luxury cruise lines send at least one cruise ship to Alaska every summer. Some of the best Alaska cruise lines are Holland America and Princess Cruises because they have especially long histories in the region and offer cruises, as well as cruise and land tour combinations, on multiple ships each season. As an avid cruiser who’s been everywhere from Alaska and Iceland to Russia and the United Arab Emirates aboard cruise ships, I’m recommending these specific cruise lines based on my own experiences and those of my friends and colleagues. My husband and I scouted out the best cruises for kids when our own children were young, and since becoming empty nesters, we’ve found the best adults-only cruises and couples cruises. Norwegian Cruise Line has proved it’s the clear leader when it comes to solo travelers.

Best Cruises Overall

If your idea of a vacation is one in which you can immerse yourself in a mythical universe, Disney is perhaps the best cruise line in the US. Live productions of Aladdin, Marvel themed dining centers, and Star Wars themed recreations allow your children to be immersed in some of their favorite pop culture fandoms. Most of the cruise’s interior is themed to Disney movies while mascots in costumes of your children’s favorite characters roam around the decks. However, the cruises also have adult-oriented activities to ensure caretakers can unwind in their exclusive poolside bars and adult only dining facilities.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

In Albany, founded in 1609, you can tour the newly renovated New York State Capitol building, built in the late 1800s; you can also visit the New York State Museum, which dates to 1836. The cruise, which is available in November and December 2024 and January, November and December 2025, ends with a full day of exploration back in New Orleans before one last night aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Well, as always, we are here to partake in this debate with our list of best cruise lines in the US. Families love Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Royal Caribbean International for an abundance of amenities befitting multi-generations.

Luxury cruises tend to be longer than other cruises, so they appeal to guests who have ample time for vacation,” she adds. With an expedition heritage that dates back to 1896, it’s no wonder Hurtigruten Expeditions found its way to Alaska. The cruise line with a keen focus on exploration, adventure and science has two of its hybrid technology ships—MS Roald Amundsen, built in 2019, and MS Fridtjof Nansen, built in 2020—sailing the waters that surround The Great Land.

Wine tasting, dance classes, and musical performances are some of the many activities that help on boarders entertain and unwind. Moreover, it offers unique excursions on the shore, as its smaller ships are able to dock into ports around the world that aren’t equipped to handle large or medium-sized liners. Each cruise also hosts a signature White Nights party, a memorable gathering atop the pool deck where attendees get to revel under the stars.

Things to do in Alaska

Passengers are allowed to venture ashore the ice cloaked terrain with trained teams of guides and geologists, interact with the area’s wildlife, and drink in the sight of colossal glaciers, icy waterfalls, and radiating hot springs. Silversea has a long list of accolades from various outlets including being the “Ultra-luxury Cruise Line of The Year” and the “Expedition/Adventure Cruise Line of the Year” in 2024. For nearly 30 years, UnCruise Adventures has embarked on voyages with a mission to provide its guests with an enriching adventure travel experience that inspires an appreciation of local cultures and the natural world. Founded in Alaska in 1996, the company has a strong pretense in The Great Land with seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries that set sail April through September.

Everyone can come back together for dinner and evening entertainment or onboard activities suitable for all ages. If you've got active teens who have an interest in nature and the environment, an expedition voyage could be exactly what will keep them engaged and off their devices. Many people trek to Alaska to commune with nature, but there's also history here that you shouldn't overlook. You'll find magnificent mountains (often snowcapped, even in the summertime), lush forests, waterfalls, fjords and calving glaciers. If it's marine life you've come to see, you'll find it in abundance, from whales and dolphins to sea lions and harbor seals. On land, you'll likely spy bears and Dall sheep while eagles, puffins and a host of seabirds circle above.

No, you can usually go on a cruise without being vaccinated for COVID-19 or other diseases. However, verify each destination's vaccine policies to ensure they have no requirements. As a rule, interior, windowless cabins are the least expensive, while cabins with ocean-view balconies are the priciest. Additionally, larger cabins and extra perks like early boarding usually come at a higher cost. Ships also have a living room where guests can gather to talk or relax while listening to classical music performed by resident musicians.

The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff. Most Alaska itineraries include some "scenic cruising," where your ship sails past incredible natural sights. If you've never visited New Orleans, or it's been a while, take a Mississippi River cruise that sails round-trip from the Big Easy.

The historic district still has a Wild West feel, though that's been a bit commercialized for the modern era. This port can get crowded in summer when several ships can call on the same day. Floatplane and helicopter tours take you around scenic areas like Misty Fjords or land you on a glacier, perhaps for a dog-sledding or hiking adventure on the ice.

Complementing the itinerary will be gourmet Pacific Northwest cuisine and more than 40 regional wines curated by an onboard culinary team. A naturalist, historian and geologist will be on hand to guide you on excursions by foot, kayak, Zodiac and jet boat. Next, during a call at Kingston/Hyde Park, you can tour the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, home to the 32nd U.S. president's library and museum. You can also head to the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, featuring an American Beaux-Arts mansion completed in 1899. The United States Military Academy at West Point, founded in 1802, is also on the itinerary, as is Sleepy Hollow. The Sleepy Hollow legend comes to life during a tour of the local cemetery where author Washington Irving is buried.

This private enclave boasts all the requisite perks you might expect, from lavish suites to grand lounges and private dining areas. MSC sets itself apart by making that complex more accessible than ever before, thanks to the line’s value-priced MSC Yacht Club Inside Staterooms that provide a lot of luxe for a little dough.
